Private schools in Missouri for year 2016-2017
Location of private schools in Missouri. Each school has the option to participate in various Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) programs. When schools participate in a DESE program, the name and address are collected in a database. Schools that do not participate in any DESE programs will not appear in this layer. It is assumed that most but not all private schools in Missouri are represented here.
Initial file generated using the Centrus Geocoder for ArcGIS extension. Positional acccuracy of geocoded data is variable.
10/2010: Data was field verified in the Southeast region of Missouri by staff in the SEMO and Bootheel Regional Planning Commission (RPC) offices, and corrections were added to this file by Missouri State Emergency Management Agency GIS staff. Data that has been field verified by these agencies has a value of "RPC" in the field "LocCode".
Geocoding for new facilities in 2011 was undertaken using the ESRI Online Geocoder. New attributes were added for contact email (SCHEMAIL) and phone (PHONE).
2013- New attributes added for COUNTY and GRADES.

XLS file from DESE web site is downloaded. File is imported into Microsoft Access. School ID is created by concatenating district number and school number. Fields are added for latitude/longitude and location code. Latitude and Longitude from previous year's layer is transferred to new file using Access update query. Locations that do not have lat/long field are new for 2007-2008. New schools are put into a new file for processing.

Access table of new schools is geocoded using Centrus Geocoder for ArcGIS. All points are checked against 2006 aerial photography. (In the Eastern 1/2 of the state, the 2007 aerial photography is used.) Latitude and Longitude coordinates for corrected locations are added to table.

New latitude and longitude points are linked back to Access table of all schools. Points are displayed in ArcMap using Display XY command. Data is exported to shape file.

2009 Updates - SCHID is added as a column and populated from CTYDIST by inserting a hypen (-) between the 1st 3 and 2nd 3 characters. Latitude, Longitude and Location code are transfered from 0708 file using SCHID as common column. There were no new facilities for 2008-09, but one closure.
Addresses were processed using Centrus Geocoder for ArcGIS to generate standardized addresses (there was a mix of cases used throughout the data set). These standardized addresses were used in placed of the original addresses.
Points were spatially joined to the county boundary to obtain county name. Attributes from county file were edited down to just county name.
Metadata from previous year was exported to text format and edited for content. This file was imported to new file for 0809.
File was exported from geodatabase to shape file format and copied to Facility.
Previous year's file was moved to archiveFacility
and renamed schoolPrivate0708.shp.

2011 Update - File was requested from DESE. Nineteen schools no longer on the list were removed from the layer. Four new schools were geocoded using the ArcGIS Online geocoder and merged with the layer. New fields were added for school email (SCHEMAIL) and for phone (PHONE). Research was done to find contact information for those schools that did not provide it. New schools were checked against aerials to QA/QC geocoding. Facilities were moved based on this effort. This was noted in the LOC_CODE attribute.

Locations for several schools previously located via aerial photography were refined during a QA/QC process for a layer depicting on daycares in Missouri. Many of the daycares are afterschool programs located in the school buildings.

QA/QC performed for the entire layer using aerial photographs, Google street view photographs, and other Internet resources.

2012 Update - File was requested from DESE. Ten (10) schools no longer on the list were removed from the layer. Sixty-Nine (69) new schools were geocoded using the ArcGIS Online geocoder and merged with the layer. New fields were added for GRADES and COUNTY. Research was done to find contact information for those schools that did not provide it. New schools were checked against aerials and Google Street Imagery to QA/QC geocoding. Facilities were moved based on this effort. This was noted in the LOC_CODE attribute.

New schools were then geocoded and checked against aerials and Google Street Imagery to QA/QC geocoding. Facilities were moved based on this effort. This was noted in the LOC_CODE attribute. This was then appended into the previous file.
