Locations derived from United States Geological Survey (USGS) digital raster graphics (DRG) 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps are accurate to no more than 12.2 meters. Locations interpolated from photography are accurate to no more than 12.2 meters. Most of the locations collected by Global Positioning System (GPS) are collected using recreational grade hand held receivers which are accurate to no more than 15 meters.
1. Records containing "dep" in the "SPECIAL" field were queried from the 1:24,000 scale United States Geological Survey (USGS) hypsography data set. After selecting all "dep" results a depression shapefile was created for the State of Missouri. This shapefile contained 58,578 records.
2. Depressions located within alluvium were removed from the depressions data set using the MGS Alluvium shapefile. This process was performed due to the lack of sinkholes found within alluvium.
3. The Center for Agricultural, Resource and Environmental System's (CARES) 1:24,000 County Boundary file was used to remove all depressions that fell outside the State of Missouri.
4. The MGS Bedrock Geology shapefile was used to remove all depressions from the data set that fell within the Pennsylvanian Bedrock. Depressions that lie within Pennsylvanian channel sandstones (PCS) and Pennsylvanian undifferentiated (PU) were not removed from the data set.
5. The data set contained 29,843 records after the queries were performed.
6. Using a 1:24,000 quad boundary shapefile produced by the Geographic Resources Center, the data set was divided into three separate groups. The groups were created so that three employees could analyze the depressions quadrangle (quad) by quad and perform analysis using the USGS North American Datum (NAD) 83 Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) to determine if the depressions were sinkholes. If the depressions were determined not to be sinkholes they were removed from the data set.
7. Once every depression in every quad was analyzed the final product resulted in a statewide 1:24,000 sinkarea shapefile. The final sinkarea/depression file contained 14,048 depressions.
8. The ArcInfo 9.1 feature to point tool was used to transform the sinkarea shapefile into the sinkhole point file.
